Does a Celebrity’s Stay in Rehab Encourage Others to Get Treatment?

Celebrities in Rehab Encourages Others to Get Treatment

Fame often comes at a high emotional cost, because celebrities who struggle with depression or anxiety due to their fame may turn to substance abuse. Those who obtain fame quickly may struggle adjusting to life in the public eye and lament their lack of privacy.

Former child stars may think they lost their childhood to a career they didn’t choose, and they may tire of chasing fame long after the success of their youth. Although fame is desired by many people, oftentimes the reality of fame is riddled with problems.

Media reports of celebrities abusing drugs have become increasingly common in recent years. One problem associated with celebrity drug abuse is that many people wish to emulate the indulgent lifestyles of the rich and famous. Celebrities who suffer from drug addiction may inadvertently encourage their fans to experiment with drugs.

However, celebrities who attend rehab can have a positive influence on their fans and help the public realize there is no shame in seeking treatment. When celebrities admit to having a problem with substance abuse, others may feel empowered to do the same.

Celebrities who Advocate Rehab and Sobriety

Demi Lovato, a singer and songwriter who began her career as a child star, has spoken openly to the public about her struggles with body image, bullying, depression and substance abuse. After spending three months in rehab, Lovato adopted the motto “Sober is Sexy” and began writing for Seventeen magazine to advocate sobriety and encourage people in need to seek rehab. She encourages her fans to use healthy outlets—such as painting, singing, and dancing—to deal with the increasing pressures on young girls to look and behave a certain way.

“All I need to have fun in life is a great attitude and good friends,” writes Lovato for Seventeen. “I’ve made a commitment to myself to live a happy, healthy life the best way I know how and I want to spread the message that you don’t need to drink or do drugs to have fun.” She also writes about her struggle with an eating disorder, and how her recovery is a daily effort. In one article, she describes how going to treatment saved her life and taught her to be “strong and healthy even through struggles.” Celebrities such as Lovato can have a profound effect on the public’s view of drug addiction treatment.
